Retired Cricket Stars Urge for more “humane” Treatment of Imprisoned Ex-PM

(MENAFN) More than a dozen retired international cricketers have appealed to Pakistani authorities to ensure more “humane” treatment of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan amid reports of deteriorating health.

Khan, who has been jailed since August 2023, is widely regarded as one of cricket’s all-time greats. He represented Pakistan from 1971 to 1992 and captained the national team to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup.

In a letter signed by former players from India, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies, the group cited “alarming deterioration” in Khan’s vision and expressed concern over his prison conditions.

According to his sister, Naureen Niazi, family members and doctors have recently been denied access to him. Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, reportedly informed the court that he has lost significant vision in his right eye after authorities allegedly ignored medical complaints for months.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered a medical team to examine Khan and has allowed him phone contact with his sons following a report from a court-appointed lawyer.

The petition was drafted by former Australian captain Greg Chappell and signed by prominent figures including former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. It was delivered to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In their appeal, the cricketers wrote that values of “fair play, honor, and respect” extend beyond sport, arguing that a former national leader and global sporting icon should be treated with dignity and basic human consideration.
